So you’ve decided that you’re done with natural grass and want artificial grass instead, but now what?

When it comes to installing artificial residential turf, you can either have it installed by a professional turf company or make it your next DIY project. Although artificial grass is low maintenance, it doesn’t mean that the installation will be an easy task.

If you want to get it right, there are some things that you need to know about installing your own artificial turf.

4 Things You Should Know About Artificial Turf Installation

    1. Proper Turf Drainage System is a Must

DIY artificial installation needs a proper drainage system, especially if you have outdoor pets or live in a flood-prone area. The right drainage system can effectively drain through the artificial turf and into the water table. In most cases, the ideal drainage system functions even better than natural grass.

Preparing your lawn involves removing organic and landscaping materials, after which, a compacted aggregate must be installed. The aggregate must adhere to the natural drainage landscape of the area. The compact aggregate’s surface should be glossy and smooth to allow the water to travel downward.

    2. You Need to Choose the Right Turf

Not all artificial turf types are created equal. While artificial turf is long-lasting and durable in general, there are many types available with varying texture, resilience, and aesthetics.

For example, if you’re planning to install wholesale artificial turf in a high-traffic area like a playground, you’ll want to choose a tougher green with excellent drainage. This type of grass is not the most aesthetic option available but it can handle high traffic including kids and pets.

For your front yard, it’s best to choose a more aesthetic turf, typically with a longer and thinner blade. Aesthetic artificial turf is ideal for front yards because it looks more realistic and vibrant.

     3. You Need to Choose the Top Infill

Choosing the right top infill is another crucial step because it dictates the staying power of your artificial turf installation. The infill is highly recommended because it fills the space in between the grass blades. Some of the benefits include springier grass, better drainage, foundation protection, and better-looking turf.

There are many different types of infill to choose from but basically, they are divided into two types: natural and artificial turf infills. One is more expensive than the other type.

    4. Low Maintenance, Not No Maintenance

People have his misconception that artificial grass doesn’t need care and maintenance. After all, they switched to artificial turf, so they don’t have to maintain it, right?

Well, if you want your artificial grass to last you a long while, long-term maintenance is a must. But don’t worry. it’s nowhere near for a natural lawn. Aside from the regular washes, the grass needs to be power-broomed to keep them upright.
